About the Wayne County Park District:
The mission of the Park District is to protect, establish, and conservatively maintain natural areas including wetlands, woodlands, streams, channels, lakes, prairie fields, and hillsides throughout Wayne County. These natural areas will be maintained for public use by providing natural areas of beauty for spiritual and mental rejuvenation, leisure activities, and the promotion of educational opportunities to study nature.
The Wayne County Park Board consists of five volunteer park commissioners that are appointed by the Probate Court Judge and serve five year terms. The Park Board is responsible for applying for grants from state and federal entities, processing of those funds, and the development of acquired park land for public use.
In 2011, new park commissioners took the helm and went to work on developing the fundraising branch, Friends of the Parks, to not only raise monies but also provide public awareness and encourage community involvement. The Board seeks guidance from the Friends of the Parks for ideas, future land possibilities, suggestions of collaboration with other organizations, and monitoring of public opinion.
